108 ferruginous ducks in Lesser Prespa!

13 Nov 2017

As part of systematic monitoring of ferruginous ducks at Lesser Prespa Lake, to determine their habitat use and estimate their population numbers (Action A2), during the most recent count 108 individuals were observed.

Corresponding counts during the summer breeding period showed that less than 10 pairs breed in Prespa. The large concentration of birds recorded during the autumn is due to the fact that ferruginous ducks are now moving to the areas where they overwinter, and they are using Prespa, which is partway on their journey, as a stopping-off point.

Wetlands with extensive reedbeds and scattered patches of open water offer ideal circumstances for ferruginous ducks to reproduce and feed. The activities of the project are aimed at improving these areas through reedbed management.
