The LIFE Prespa Waterbirds project aimed to restore and conserve the supporting ecosystem functions of habitats in Lesser Prespa Lake, by restoring spawning grounds of fish, and expanding feeding habitats and protecting breeding habitats of targeted waterbird species. As inherent in the proposal, the LIFE Prespa Waterbirds project did confer benefits to local society. Particular ecosystem services were expected to be enhanced as a result of project actions, and the trends of five specific ecosystem services were assessed at the end of the project. This assessment identified enhancing trends for important provisioning and cultural ecosystem services, and stability in the trend of a regulating service, while also acknowledging climate change as a critical parameter affecting the provision of some ecosystem services to a higher degree than others.
