Collective decision-making for Lake Lesser Prespa

08 Apr 2019

The annual meeting of the Wetland Management Committee (WMC) was convened on the 29th March 2019. In the 12th meeting of the WMC, several wetland management issues were discussed, such as the annual management regime for the wetland vegetation management, the control of the lake water level through the sluice gate, as well as the definition of the “closed” period for fishing.

The issues of fires within the wetland was extensively discussed, highlighting the need for applying management measure for the aversion and the limitation of the expansion of such fire events. Additionally, emphasis was given to the proposed vegetation management measures within the wetland and the drainage channels, to be implemented jointly by the stock-breeders and the LIFE – Prespa Waterbirds projects, under the guidance of the Management Body of the Prespa National Park (MBPNP). This meeting was very important of the LIFE Prespa Waterbirds project, as all proposed interventions for 2019 were presented and unanimously agreed-upon. Decision-making for wetland management is one of the jurisdictions of the MBPNP, and the role of the WMC is advisory, but as confirmed over the last 12 years, very important.
