Establishment of a fire station for Prespa

14 Jun 2020

Today’s establishment of a fire station in Prespa is an exceptionally important event, which has come following years of requests from many residents and organisations in the area. The protection of a geographically isolated region, with a distinctive natural wealth, is a clear priority for all. However, the station is only seasonal and does not cover the months when we frequently have fires in the reedbeds, placing in danger waterbird species of global importance.
In the LIFE Prespa waterbirds project we have created firebreak zones in the wetland and we hope that the promise of the Undersecretary for Civil Protection to make the station permanent will soon become a reality. A permanent fire station, which would also operate outside of the usual fire season, would provide continuous cover for the reedbeds.
