The picture for great white and Dalmatian pelicans looks good for 2020. Pelicans only very occasionally use their nesting islets at this time of year, so we took the opportunity to go and record their condition, and also see how many chicks didn’t survive this year.

The Presplorers set out in late September to record changes of the shore in Lesser Prespa that we had visited again at the beginning of spring.

In July, local stock-breeders joined their forces once again with the LIFE Prespa Waterbirds team and began wetland management activities, which have almost been completed in some of the most important areas of the wetland, such as Opaya, Slatina Plateos, and Mikros Kampos.

As part of work to conserve wet meadows, as well as pilot actions for the prevention of damage by wild boar, solar-powered electric fencing was placed along areas of Opagia and Slatina Plateos during the summer of 2020.

With the endeavour to deliver the Prespa region’s first transboundary virtual summer school for students from the three countries sharing the Prespa lakes having come to an end, we cannot help being delighted with the results and grateful for the co-operative spirit in which this summer school on wetland management and monitoring was organised and delivered.

Multiple vegetation monitoring activities have been successfully completed by our colleagues from Tour du Valat. Activities included the development of vegetation development in areas that were managed under the project in 2018 and 2019.

This Monday we began our virtual transboundary summer school on “Wetland Management and Monitoring”. Students from Albania, North Macedonia and Greece are meeting online for the next two weeks and will learn more about the many different and interconnected aspects of wetland management, as well as exchanging knowledge and experience with their peers.
