The otter (Lutra lutra) at the reedbeds of Lesser Prespa

27 Feb 2018

As part of the project’s preparatory actions, a number of studies have been carried out on various flora and fauna species, the results of which will feed into plans for the management of the reedbeds. One of these studies concerned the otter (Lutra lutra), a mammal which can be seen in the reedbeds of Prespa. Based on the conclusions of this piece of research, Lesser Prespa Lake adequately covers all the habitat needs of this species. Moreover, the study estimated that the central and southern sections of the lake hold 14 female otter territories. The study was largely based on the evidence of otter tracks and other signs, such as spraints, as otters are quite difficult to see in the wild. Having said this, only last week one of our colleagues was lucky enough to see one for a few minutes as it played in the reeds and managed to capture some beautiful photographs.
