The summer cuttings of reedbed were completed in Lesser Prespa

31 Jul 2019

The first phase of wetland vegetation management was completed this summer. During this period the project team cut fresh reed in the priority areas of the littoral zone, which had been identified in the annual operation plan. The cuttings took place in the north and eastern part of the lake on a total area of 12.8 ha. The cut material was collected in round bales and distributed as animal fodder to cover local needs. In parallel, the local stockbreeders cut another 7.2 ha, therefore a total of 20 ha of the Lesser Prespa’s littoral zone were put under management this summer. The next phase of management will start in early autumn, with the combined efforts of the LIFE Prespa Waterbirds project and the local stockbreeders, following, as always, the guidelines of the operational plan, as approved by the Management Body of the Prespa national.
