Welcoming the target species, through the Midwinter Bird Counts

On January, like every year in Lesser and Great Prespa, the midwinter bird counts took place. This program is organized by the Hellenic Ornithological Society with the cooperation of many bodies and organization, such as the Society of Protection of Prespa and lots of volunteers. Since 2010, the Midwinter bird counts have been held, on a transboundary basis and are synchronized with the two neighboring countries which share the area. The team of SPP, with the participation of the Μanagement Body of the Prespa National Park and the non-government organizations, MES in FYROM and PPNEA in Albania, move parametrical of the lakes counting the wetland bird species. On the Greek side, the total number of birds counted were 13.225. Among them were some of the 9 target species of the project. The Ferruginous Duck (12), the Dalmatian Pelican (3) and the Pygmy Cormorant (74).
