World Biodiversity Day 2021
22 May 2021
Home to a mosaic of habitats, important waterbirds, endemic fish, mammals, and other biodiversity, the wetlands of Lake Lesser Prespa have provided to local societies for centuries. Fisheries, grasslands, fodder, structural material, irrigation, leisure, education are only a few of the provided ecosystem services related to the wetland and the conservation of habitats. In this ever-changing ecosystem that has in recent years seen an abandonment of traditional activities that sustain habitats, coupled with arising threats such as climate change and eutrophication, we need to adapt today’s activities to arising challenges; and we are all in this together.
The LIFE Prespa Waterbirds project has brought together authorities and stakeholders for the conservation of wetland habitats in Lake Lesser Prespa, Greece and takes a step further to ensure transboundary cooperation for the conservation of the entire Prespa basin. We are all part of the solution!
